Systematic desensitization in the treatment of anxiety

Systematic desensitization is a type of behavioral therapy used in the field of psychology to help patients successfully phobias and other anxiety disorders to overcome. For the first time that a South African psychiatrist Joseph Wolpe called this form of therapy the patient is gradually exposed to what he fears. The idea behind this therapy is that the more a patient presents their feared object, the more will be able to deal with the cause of fear and dealing withfeelings.

This technique is also known as "graduated exposure therapy." Understandably, patients must first be trained to be calm and control your anxiety before they are actually exposed to the feared object or situation. Once the coping skills are taught, the patient will be used to respond to the feared object and try to triumph over difficult feelings such as fear.

As you can imagine, almost every phobia patients deliberately trying to avoidthe sources of their fears, like spiders, dogs, snakes or situations encountered in a confined space, the crowds or high places. Escape this purpose does not help to overcome their fears, and ultimately feel the need to determine the cause of their problems.

There is also a group of patients who have tried the methods of distraction to cope with anxiety. derivation methods, as the name suggests, mainly try to involve addictive behavior likedrinking alcohol, smoking or even drugs. Traditional medicines can also be used to treat type of phobic anxiety, but actually the thoughts of patients to reduce their over-reaction to adapt to stimuli.

The key is systematic desensitization gradually rather than quickly, expose patients to the phobic object. Gradually forced to confront what they fear, most patients are capable of reconciliation, tolerance over, and finally acceptthe object. If this technique is applied too quickly or without care to patients, the result can be dangerous and even traumatic.

Together with systematic desensitization, a different treatment techniques are some commonly used at the same time. These include methods such as relaxation breathing techniques, and reinforce positive thoughts. Another effective technique called cognitive restructuring. With this technique the patient is forced to imagine what will happen whenthe feared object is directly opposite him. After actual exposure, the patient is asked to compare his imagination exaggerated their fair response during exposure. It is found that a surprisingly serene effect on the patient to produce.

Despite their sensitivity, systematic desensitization is a very safe method for treating anxiety when applied with professional care. Rather than avoid the source of fear, anxiety, patients now have an option toshoot directly at the root of their problems.

There are some great self-help guides available online panic attacks that have been used successfully by thousands of people to overcome agoraphobia. They will help to show how to relieve anxiety, so that they no longer experience panic. With repeated exposure to situations of fear and the use of these techniques will overcome her agoraphobia. You can guide for more information on the best self-help by using thethe link below this article.

Another form of self-help therapy that can help in the treatment of agoraphobia is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). This is like acupuncture, but also works with emotions touching certain points on the body with your fingers. The theory behind EFT is that tapping helps to release emotional tension caused by the phobia.

Exposure therapy can be used to treat agoraphobia. It works by teaching relaxation sufferingtechniques and come to think that in a situation where you have previously experienced panic. When you are anxious you can then apply relaxation techniques to feelings of anxiety. Then you apply the same techniques of exposure to real life situations.

People with agoraphobia have been helped with hypnosis. With hypnosis you have the option of visiting a professional therapist or you may listena recorded hypnotherapy sessions on CD, DVD or MP3 music downloads. These are available for all types of fears and phobias such as agoraphobia.

Here is an illuminating feminist appraisal of the problems of sex differences and sexist treatment of women's mental health problems by state mental health agencies. In this provocative volume, prominent feminist scholars and practitioners provide insights into the problems of biased treatment of women and provide both factual evidence of that bias and effective, viable solutions for change. The editors are members of the Women's Task Force of the Department of Mental Health in the State of Michigan. The Task Force is comprised of women health professionals who are aware of sexism in the mental health services provided by the State and have taken action to change the biased treatment of women.

The most effective treatments for agoraphobia

If you seek professional help for agoraphobia, you really need to be informed about the most effective form of therapy for a visit to a therapist for the first time. This way you are informed enough to talk intelligently about treatment options and work with the therapist to make decisions best for their recovery.

Although therapists are trained to help you recover from agoraphobia, which will own every effort to take responsibility for theirrecovery. You can follow therapist or treatment program suggestions, but some therapists are biased towards one or more types of therapies that are more familiar. Always keep in mind that ultimately, the therapist works for what you need to be informed.

Results vary from study to study, but in general, a combination of cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy and medication has proven effective for the restoration of agoraphobia in the controlstudies.

Here is a brief description of each of the three most effective forms of therapy:

Behavioral therapy: focuses on avoidance behavior change that results in fear. Most effective forms of behavioral therapy are systematic desensitization and flooding. Systematic desensitization is a therapy that gradual exposure to feared values gradually return to the condition that you relax instead of feeling fear and panic involved. Flooding is forcingto stay on the stage afraid to panic and anxiety disappear with time.

Cognitive therapy focuses primarily on changing thinking patterns that cause you anxiety. Three main forms of cognitive therapy is intended to replace, to stop thinking and approach. In the spirit of substitution (also called cognitive restructuring), the therapist teaches you to become aware and change their irrational patterns, anxiety-producing thought. In your mind to stop, learn techniques for warning andcut irrational thinking at the time, and approach, the therapist teaches you to focus your attention on something in your current environment, the involvement of all senses, to feelings of panic and fear to deflect.

Drugs: Focuses on changing physical processes in the brains through chemical intervention. Most effective medications prescribed for agoraphobia are benzodiazepines and SSRIs. Benzodiazepines are tranquilizers like Xanax, Valium and Ativan. SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are a newer form of antidepressant that Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft covers. Effexor (a selective inhibitor of norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and) is a close cousin of SSRIs and is also a popular medication prescribed to the agoraphobia.

Of course, when the use of drugs, it is best to consult your doctor about possible side effects, tolerance and withdrawal. Medication alone is not a long term solutionagoraphobia> and is the best choice to help you relax during the training and cognitive-behavioral forms.
It is strongly recommended), try a combination of cognitive and behavioral forms of therapy (with or without medication for experimenting with alternative treatment options.

Since these treatments do not always work the same for all other forms of treatment for agoraphobia developedinclude:

Psychodynamic therapy (or vision therapy)

Hypnosis

Herbal treatments

Biofeedback

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

If you have agoraphobia, which will treat everything possible to treat cognitive-behavioral therapies tested more before alternative forms.

Treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

One of the most common reasons to target clients in treatment at my NLP and CBT practice Hertfordshire is for anxiety and panic related problems such as generalized anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia. Often, panic attacks are associated with other disorders such as generalized anxiety, phobias or depression. In this case, the appropriate course to address these underlying issues first - the panic attacks usually subside, and that other issues aresolved.

Worked in the NHS in its last year Mental Health Occupational Therapist, who tend to get in touch with people living in what is considered serious psychological problems. It is these people who have mental health and services aimed at supporting and rightly so. However, in order to enter private practice, was not aware of the number of people who live daily with the often debilitating effects of panic and anxiety, which seems little or no support from NHS services to the limit.

NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) recommends Cognitive therapy to treat anxiety, panic attacks and panic disorder. His research has shown that it is more effective than drug therapy. Therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) involves the patient seeing a therapist in a ratio of one to one sessions for one hour . Totalcure> is usually between 6 and 12 sessions, with one session per week.

During the NLP and CBT Herts, working with people experiencing anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia, usually for a period of 8 weeks, once a week. It is flexible, and more or less sessions are conducted according to the unique needs of the individual. It is clear that reducing the cost of treatment for the customer is directed, in particular, often work with people whostopped working because of their problem.

Between sessions of the client to complete the task. Support and encouragement via e-mail, if necessary.

What will you achieve through NLP and CBT Herts are?

1. No more stinking thinking!
In CBT and NLP, Herts, people are supported to identify and distorted thinking patterns that maintain anxiety change. Behind the panic attacks and anxiety are negative thoughts. These thoughts alone can not lead to fear, butbelief in the truth of these thoughts can lead to anxiety. The therapist works with the client to reduce belief in such thoughts, which in turn reduces anxiety.

2.Building its hierarchy "It's insensitive to your anxiety through gradual exposure to the feared situation. The therapist offers practical support and activities can be carried out in the community during these sessions.

3. Learning strategies to your anxiety and panic clients from the master NLP and CBTHerts are taught specific techniques that can be used and must be practiced between sessions. The challenge is to use these techniques at times when you experience more panic and clients are supported to be competent in this. Learning strategies may be NLP techniques, such as sub-modality work, anchoring and clean language techniques.

4. Change of focus - one of the things you learn is to change its approach to what you want, instead of what you want. One of the things I've found is that people with anxiety disorders and panic invest a lot of time trying to avoid and get away from fear and panic. That is understandable. But what will really learn is that focuses on fear and panic, just by the language and the internal dialogue you use. It teaches you to concentrate on what we are trying to achieve immediate benefits and experience in how you feelemotional.

I've noticed that customers who are truly committed to mastering their fear and panic, the change they want, attachment experience 8 weeks CBT / NLP in Hertfordshire program. It is gratifying for me to work with people with these problems, because the results are very positive.

Therapy and agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a common syndrome in panic disorder. Agoraphobia "This term is derived from the Greek, 'agora', the market and phobia means" fear of specific event.

In general, most people's perception of agoraphobia sufferer feel vulnerable and afraid in a public place or open. For example in a queue, in the commercial, the garden and the victim, so the output is not clear, develop dizziness, suffocation during this event.

However, Agoraphobia is not, as many people think, and open spaces. It is necessary for any place or situation where people feel insecure, trapped and the desire to escape. So people suffering in this case are more comfortable to stay at home and to keep the location of specific fear.

Victim feels unsafe leaving your comfort zone, mostly at home at a certain point, your room. Consequently, they rarely venture far from home after beaten byagoraphobia>. Tend to rely on others, such as family and friends for daily life.

Stay in the comfort zone is no place for agoraphobia. This gets to avoid a particular danger, it means that fences to determine their limited free space to move. Restriction not immediately worsen in the case, but in no time.

In most cases, the severely ill are very dependent on family or friends for theirdaily activities, this time put pressure on a run to support carers.

In fact, researchers found agoraphobia is increasingly common and has infected up to 1 ½% of the population. Moreover, there is 1 in 8 people with less severe. Agoraphobia is a classic start early adulthood to peak between 18 and 30. The studies showed that people in this age group more stressful life events and depression than other age groups face.

AlthoughAgoraphobia is already known in the first decades, but the cause remains a mystery, but experts believe it is correct to say that is caused by the number of cases instead of one.

Born or agoraphobia - most people are naturally born with agoraphobia, in the sense that your body produces more adrenaline than others.

environment or should be - to grow with people who pull together to ensure that their conduct can lead to avoidance behavior in developing countriesin the future.

Consequences or effects - people seem to "nothing" after a first panic attack, fear of another attack, so avoid ending itself attacked from the last place or situation.

Stressful, frightening and painful event or - a stressful and painful experience of fear memory can lead people to the emotional reaction and get to agoraphobia.

In the treatment of agoraphobia, which traditionally are not ways, but the workineffective. Psychoanalytical and drug treatment has been tried, but the result sometimes lead to big problems.

So far there are two known therapies to help sufferers get rid of agoraphobia.

The first is behavioral, where he is taught to confront their phobic situation. They fear to think of the situation and also in the real situation in agoraphobia occurred. This exposure usually takes 2-3 Hours instead phobic.

Second method is cognitive therapy, is a kind of psychotherapy, it is also useful for treating anxiety, depression and other mental illness. It involves recognizing unhelpful or destructive patterns of thinking and reacting, then modify them with more realistic and helpful.

Both methods are powerful, but cognitive therapy adds benefit more than just behavioral therapy. Indeed, the latter is good enough to achieve their goals. Isgave 70% success with the phobia of people who completed the program be eliminated. Cognitive behavioral therapy is to prepare for is not.

Agoraphobia can be easily released from the patients when they refer to professional therapist. But alas, their number is insufficient in comparison with phobic population. So patients must learn some self-help skills that focus on exposure and how it applies.

O exposure should be long enoughsense of fear begins to fade. This typically can take several hours. Avoid short-term exposure and escape halfway, could cause big problem.

o After the first exposure, after exposure to regularly to get rid of the phobia completely.

or concerned relatives or friends as co-therapist. To be determined after suffering.

or buy self-help literature for the control of the mind more and understand more about psychological and physiologicalreaction.

• Avoid drinking alcohol at all costs.

Prevention o. functions as a suppressor of emotional medication means that only short-term goal rather than the long-term goal.

More people are trapped in a moving ceremony today, however, should receive our fully equipped. Not limit our ability to see the things we see and hear.
