Systematic desensitization in the treatment of anxiety

Systematic desensitization is a type of behavioral therapy used in the field of psychology to help patients successfully phobias and other anxiety disorders to overcome. For the first time that a South African psychiatrist Joseph Wolpe called this form of therapy the patient is gradually exposed to what he fears. The idea behind this therapy is that the more a patient presents their feared object, the more will be able to deal with the cause of fear and dealing withfeelings.

This technique is also known as "graduated exposure therapy." Understandably, patients must first be trained to be calm and control your anxiety before they are actually exposed to the feared object or situation. Once the coping skills are taught, the patient will be used to respond to the feared object and try to triumph over difficult feelings such as fear.

As you can imagine, almost every phobia patients deliberately trying to avoidthe sources of their fears, like spiders, dogs, snakes or situations encountered in a confined space, the crowds or high places. Escape this purpose does not help to overcome their fears, and ultimately feel the need to determine the cause of their problems.

There is also a group of patients who have tried the methods of distraction to cope with anxiety. derivation methods, as the name suggests, mainly try to involve addictive behavior likedrinking alcohol, smoking or even drugs. Traditional medicines can also be used to treat type of phobic anxiety, but actually the thoughts of patients to reduce their over-reaction to adapt to stimuli.

The key is systematic desensitization gradually rather than quickly, expose patients to the phobic object. Gradually forced to confront what they fear, most patients are capable of reconciliation, tolerance over, and finally acceptthe object. If this technique is applied too quickly or without care to patients, the result can be dangerous and even traumatic.

Together with systematic desensitization, a different treatment techniques are some commonly used at the same time. These include methods such as relaxation breathing techniques, and reinforce positive thoughts. Another effective technique called cognitive restructuring. With this technique the patient is forced to imagine what will happen whenthe feared object is directly opposite him. After actual exposure, the patient is asked to compare his imagination exaggerated their fair response during exposure. It is found that a surprisingly serene effect on the patient to produce.

Despite their sensitivity, systematic desensitization is a very safe method for treating anxiety when applied with professional care. Rather than avoid the source of fear, anxiety, patients now have an option toshoot directly at the root of their problems.

Treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

One of the most common reasons to target clients in treatment at my NLP and CBT practice Hertfordshire is for anxiety and panic related problems such as generalized anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia. Often, panic attacks are associated with other disorders such as generalized anxiety, phobias or depression. In this case, the appropriate course to address these underlying issues first - the panic attacks usually subside, and that other issues aresolved.

Worked in the NHS in its last year Mental Health Occupational Therapist, who tend to get in touch with people living in what is considered serious psychological problems. It is these people who have mental health and services aimed at supporting and rightly so. However, in order to enter private practice, was not aware of the number of people who live daily with the often debilitating effects of panic and anxiety, which seems little or no support from NHS services to the limit.

NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) recommends Cognitive therapy to treat anxiety, panic attacks and panic disorder. His research has shown that it is more effective than drug therapy. Therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) involves the patient seeing a therapist in a ratio of one to one sessions for one hour . Totalcure> is usually between 6 and 12 sessions, with one session per week.

During the NLP and CBT Herts, working with people experiencing anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia, usually for a period of 8 weeks, once a week. It is flexible, and more or less sessions are conducted according to the unique needs of the individual. It is clear that reducing the cost of treatment for the customer is directed, in particular, often work with people whostopped working because of their problem.

Between sessions of the client to complete the task. Support and encouragement via e-mail, if necessary.

What will you achieve through NLP and CBT Herts are?

1. No more stinking thinking!
In CBT and NLP, Herts, people are supported to identify and distorted thinking patterns that maintain anxiety change. Behind the panic attacks and anxiety are negative thoughts. These thoughts alone can not lead to fear, butbelief in the truth of these thoughts can lead to anxiety. The therapist works with the client to reduce belief in such thoughts, which in turn reduces anxiety.

2.Building its hierarchy "It's insensitive to your anxiety through gradual exposure to the feared situation. The therapist offers practical support and activities can be carried out in the community during these sessions.

3. Learning strategies to your anxiety and panic clients from the master NLP and CBTHerts are taught specific techniques that can be used and must be practiced between sessions. The challenge is to use these techniques at times when you experience more panic and clients are supported to be competent in this. Learning strategies may be NLP techniques, such as sub-modality work, anchoring and clean language techniques.

4. Change of focus - one of the things you learn is to change its approach to what you want, instead of what you want. One of the things I've found is that people with anxiety disorders and panic invest a lot of time trying to avoid and get away from fear and panic. That is understandable. But what will really learn is that focuses on fear and panic, just by the language and the internal dialogue you use. It teaches you to concentrate on what we are trying to achieve immediate benefits and experience in how you feelemotional.

I've noticed that customers who are truly committed to mastering their fear and panic, the change they want, attachment experience 8 weeks CBT / NLP in Hertfordshire program. It is gratifying for me to work with people with these problems, because the results are very positive.

Several options for the treatment of anxiety

One of the most common concerns in life focuses on social phobia. Social phobia is the very real fear of social situations. When people fear for social phobia, which may be aiming at the abolition of family events and outings to feel. Social phobias can quickly move into full blown agoraphobia (fear of leaving the house) if left untreated.

Anxiety treatments for social phobia vary depending on the intensity of socialfear. Many treatments focus on the psychological, while some patients may turn to prescription drugs and hypnotherapy to treat disorders. The path chosen fear treatment will be determined by an assessment of the severity of social phobia and the patient's wishes for treatment.

Psychological treatments of anxiety often begin with a visit to a psychologist. During the first visit to the psychologist determined the severity of thecondition and an action plan to discuss with the patient. Many social phobias are rooted in a past experience that caused a block of all types are placed in the mind. This block prevents the patient is able to understand or even acknowledge the cause of social phobia. Talking to a psychologist for several sessions to help patients improve the disorder and the possible causes of the phobia to understand. Once the cause is understood, the psychologist will help the patientat the head of the school attack and phobia to live their lives without the phobia.

In a similar vein, a therapist can offer treatment for anxiety in a patient with a social phobia. Using hypnosis, the hypnotherapist gently persuade the minds of over time. At one point during the treatment of hypnosis, the hypnotherapist to block hoping to find that I spoke earlier. Once the block is found, the therapist accompanies the patient on the block insubconscious, eliminating the need for social alienation.

In severe cases of social phobia, or where hypnotherapy and psychology are not able to mind to break the block of, can prescribe medication as a way of treating anxiety disorders. These drugs, also known as anti-anxiety medications work on the central nervous system and brains. Essential medicines calm the person to feel less anxiety in social situations. These treatments are onlyeffective as long as the patient keeps a strict schedule of medications.

fear of the combination therapy may be used in almost all cases of social phobia. Combination therapy is the use of two or more therapies for the treatment of social phobia. Many psychologists will prescribe medication to calm the patient, while the acquisition of the possible causes of the phobia.

Social phobia is a very real mental state anxiety, stress and physical symptoms can cause. Does not matterHow it started phobia, the treatment is the fear necessary for the problem are there and waiting for the patient to begin the healing. Psychiatrists, psychologists, hypnotherapists and other doctors can help patients with social phobia to recover from this condition.

A plan of treatment of panic disorder - Six Areas

Even in the face of imminent peril, the kind of fear that it is best to ensure the survival and welfare of the endangered species is not panic. Panic is a dysfunctional, out of hand in a sort of fear. Panic is something you want removed and discarded, so to speak. If panic is a recurring problem, which some call a disorder.

A treatment plan for panic disorder as in this case is that panic disorder is correctly diagnosed, even if it is not the case, a diagnosisin order. On the one hand, panic disorder can accompany other problems are addressed, such as agoraphobia. Agoraphobia usually occurs when you're so bound by the fear that prevents shopping or go out of your house or something.

In other words, an ideal treatment plan should address specific cases and the underlying causes. However, a number of principles and practices that are widely applicable. At this point, temporary symptomshelp from medication or herbal or homeopathic remedies may come to mind. In fact, drugs and herbs sometimes used long-term suffering panic. However, an ideal treatment plan focuses on casting time and workarounds mere symptom relief. The drugs can cause unpleasant side effects. Replacement of the relief of symptoms in the treatment of the causes of panic is a preferred long term solution, and one closer to what they call a "plan."

But this plan requiresmotivation and discipline. There is panic disorder patients who prefer their current status, such as the effect of restoring a peaceful and balanced emotional state. Or lack of motivation. And even for people with a kind of motivation and discipline, some measures to support difficult. It may be easier to fall into a hole to get out.

But dating is possible. Sufficient reason and discipline, panic disorder or panic attacks may sufferincorporate more general application of the principles and practices in a treatment plan. These can be used in conjunction with professional help too.

I. Deep breathing exercises

Hyperventilation is common in victims of panic attack and helps the body sensations that we associate with panic. Deep abdominal breathing reduces the offer to the symptoms of anxiety and hyperventilation is to calm the brains.

The daily practice of deep, slow abdominalbreathe for a period of several weeks, so prefer the second type of training. This makes it easier to practice and the beginning of a panic attack or experiencing increased anxiety.

Are two to four times times during the day to practice breathing deeply and slowly for several minutes per session. If the practice is maintained for several weeks, is often one of the most useful exercises for panic attacks, although it looks simple.

II.Reconsideration of the irrational

suffering from panic may be driven by irrational fears of their own physical symptoms and / or irrational fear of a difficult past. Acknowledges that these fears are irrational recruited to the conscious mind in the battle for the fears out of hand again. Younger children may need special help to distinguish irrational thoughts.

III. Keeping a diary

A blog panic and emotional distress is not intended to be used for testing and fearsfailures. That would be self-defeating. But blogging is a way to discipline and organize their thoughts. And practice can contribute to the catharsis. This can be used to expose and own unbalanced thinking to identify and eventually form the basis for long-term goals.

A blog can help to identify what we fear loss, danger, separation from a loved one or a happy environment, shame, what we have learned that young children, and so on terror. Each cause can be clearlyaddressed.

Over time, a magazine show some significant progress.

IV. Repeat victory, play down the defeat

Retraining your subconscious takes time and effort. Recognize successes and test reinforced paths in the brains that tells the subconscious to stay calm. This may come as a trip to the store or to an idea or a victory in a condition where you are anxious for no good reason. At the same time, removingtest negative thought processes associated with synapses decreases anxiety.

Writing and the repetition of "can do" and "feel good" kind of statement trains the subconscious. Avoid "I'm not afraid," "I do not panic," and the negative expressions of victory and the subconscious mind can ignore the negative ("no") and therefore confirm the fear.

V. Regular exercise

Regular exercise helps to improve mood, not to mention the strain relief brings sedentarysupport. Regular exercise also has the motivation and discipline. Plan times a week for exercise (and consult your doctor.)

VI. Decisions that have to do.

Our panic may be based on the fear associated with one or more decisions that have to do. Progress in overcoming panic attacks may need to take the first place, but often the stress occurs after the difficult but necessary decision is made and action taken.

Or you canneed for a choice that can lead to fear about, perhaps changing medications that contribute to their sense of fear or stop the consumption of alcohol, sugar, or a food to which a sensitivity or an allergy.

Description:
The present study explored the effect of perceived criticism (PC) on levels of anxiety and depression during behavioral treatment among patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA). We posited that patients' perceptions of relatives' criticism and the degree to which they were upset by the criticism (UC) would be related to negative affect and discomfort during exposure. The sample included 75 patients with a primary diagnosis of OCD (n=43) or PDA (n=32) and their participating relatives. Measures of patients' weekly ratings of PC and upset about the criticism, anxious and depressed mood, and subjective discomfort during exposure treatment were analyzed using a mixed model regression approach (SAS Proc Mixed). Patients' anxious and depressed mood predicted greater discomfort during exposure. Patients who were more UC also had higher weekly ratings of anxiety and depression, and more discomfort during exposure sessions. Findings suggest that treatment outcome may be improved by attention to patients' reactions to their interpersonal environment.
