The most effective treatments for agoraphobia

If you seek professional help for agoraphobia, you really need to be informed about the most effective form of therapy for a visit to a therapist for the first time. This way you are informed enough to talk intelligently about treatment options and work with the therapist to make decisions best for their recovery.

Although therapists are trained to help you recover from agoraphobia, which will own every effort to take responsibility for theirrecovery. You can follow therapist or treatment program suggestions, but some therapists are biased towards one or more types of therapies that are more familiar. Always keep in mind that ultimately, the therapist works for what you need to be informed.

Results vary from study to study, but in general, a combination of cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy and medication has proven effective for the restoration of agoraphobia in the controlstudies.

Here is a brief description of each of the three most effective forms of therapy:

Behavioral therapy: focuses on avoidance behavior change that results in fear. Most effective forms of behavioral therapy are systematic desensitization and flooding. Systematic desensitization is a therapy that gradual exposure to feared values gradually return to the condition that you relax instead of feeling fear and panic involved. Flooding is forcingto stay on the stage afraid to panic and anxiety disappear with time.

Cognitive therapy focuses primarily on changing thinking patterns that cause you anxiety. Three main forms of cognitive therapy is intended to replace, to stop thinking and approach. In the spirit of substitution (also called cognitive restructuring), the therapist teaches you to become aware and change their irrational patterns, anxiety-producing thought. In your mind to stop, learn techniques for warning andcut irrational thinking at the time, and approach, the therapist teaches you to focus your attention on something in your current environment, the involvement of all senses, to feelings of panic and fear to deflect.

Drugs: Focuses on changing physical processes in the brains through chemical intervention. Most effective medications prescribed for agoraphobia are benzodiazepines and SSRIs. Benzodiazepines are tranquilizers like Xanax, Valium and Ativan. SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are a newer form of antidepressant that Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft covers. Effexor (a selective inhibitor of norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and) is a close cousin of SSRIs and is also a popular medication prescribed to the agoraphobia.

Of course, when the use of drugs, it is best to consult your doctor about possible side effects, tolerance and withdrawal. Medication alone is not a long term solutionagoraphobia> and is the best choice to help you relax during the training and cognitive-behavioral forms.
It is strongly recommended), try a combination of cognitive and behavioral forms of therapy (with or without medication for experimenting with alternative treatment options.

Since these treatments do not always work the same for all other forms of treatment for agoraphobia developedinclude:

Psychodynamic therapy (or vision therapy)

Hypnosis

Herbal treatments

Biofeedback

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

If you have agoraphobia, which will treat everything possible to treat cognitive-behavioral therapies tested more before alternative forms.

Map-III is a systematic cognitive-behavioral program, which uses behavioral self-monitoring to increase awareness of circumstances that trigger panic symptoms. Clients learn specific intervention skills, including how to slow down physiological reactivity through breathing retraining and muscle relaxing training; how to de-catastrophise through actual prediction testing; and how to lessen fearfulness through exposure to feared sensations in safe settings. This workbook is intended to accompany the "MAP-3 Client Workbook for Anxiety and Panic" (ISBN 0-19-518697-4), but is written for individuals who have agoraphobia. This workbook deals mostly with agoraphobic avoidances. Many of the principles and procedures described in this workbook follow directly from the principles and procedures of the client workbook for anxiety and panic. Therefore, the authors suggest that the clients read the client workbook for anxiety and panic before starting with this workbook. They recommend doing so even if the clients are not currently experiencing panic attacks because, as they describe in much more detail in the chapters, agoraphobia tends to be fueled by a person's concerns about having panic attacks or panic-like symptoms, even when panic attacks have not happened for quite some time.
